The Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 isn’t a bad machine, just an awkward one. It fulfills every promise, checks every box Lenovo says it will. It is technically a 2-in-1 machine. It’s just that the laptop part of this equation works significantly better than the tablet part, even though you’re paying for the luxury of a 2-in-1. Combine that with a lackluster aesthetic and dim screen, and it’s hard to justify the Flex 5’s existence. Lenovo’s own Yoga line outclasses it in every way, for just a few dollars more. Look to the Yoga first, if you’re set on a Lenovo 2-in-1.

The Stream 14 has a lightweight plastic chassis, measuring 13.3 x 8.9 x 0.70 inches and weighing just 3.11 pounds. The plastic construction feels hollow and flexes a bit with every keystroke and tap on the trackpad — an issue we didn’t encounter when we tested the smaller HP Stream 11. The palm rest has a textured pattern and gets a dash of two-toned style thanks to the white keyboard. This is similar in both size and weight to other 14-inch systems in this price range, like the Lenovo Ideapad 100S-14, which measures 13.3 x 9.3 x 0.7 inches and weighs 3.2 pounds.

The Stream 14 has a 14-inch display with a 1366 x 768 resolution, which isn’t uncommon in this ultra-budget price range. When I watched the trailer for Thor: Ragnarok, the colorful trailer looked OK. The Hulk’s skin looked to be the right shade of green, explosions flared orange and the lightning crackling off of Thor looked bluish white.

The case of the Lenovo IdeaPad 320-15IKB is mainly made of plastic. The only decoration on the outside is the Lenovo lettering, which makes the case rather inconspicuous. The smooth surface of the base unit imitates an aluminum finish and fits well into the overall design concept. The device looks good but is not quite as robust as we would have hoped: The display warps easily under very little pressure. The base unit is more stable, but we were still able to warp it without too much force. The center of the base clearly gives way under pressure as well. Pressing onto the screen causes visible waves on the display. The hinges do a good job, however – they have a very wide opening angle (almost 180 degrees) and the display does not wobble too much either.

According to Lenovo’s website, the IdeaPad 320 can last up to 6 hours on a battery charge, which is disappointing considering we typically look for at least 8 hours in any laptop (with the exception of gaming models). In contrast, the Aspire E 15 lasted 8 hours and 48 minutes on our Laptop Mag Battery Test.
Based on the specs and price alone, we’d recommend avoiding the Lenovo IdeaPad 320. Sure, it’s slimmer and lighter than something like the Aspire E 15, but the performance, battery life and display resolution simply aren’t worth the price.
